Measuring complex milled and turned parts with tight tolerances can be difficult using conventional tools and gauges.
To make this easier, we have installed a Keyence XM-5000 Portable Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM). ‘Portable’ means parts can be measured in-situ on the machine tool or away from the machine on a bench.
The machine consists of a wireless camera and a hand held touch probe used in conjunction with a PC enabling parts to be measured to an exremely high accuracy in an envelope of 2m x 1m x 1.2m
The probe has a camera which shows part features on the PC screen which can be measured for diameter, distance between faces, angles, parallelism etc.

The measuring sequence and results are recorded and can be replayed to guide operatives though a consistent inspection procedure which compares actual and required measurements showing trends for corrective action. The results are stored for QA and traceability records.

The results can also be compared with an imported 3D model or 2D drawing of the part.
This new CMM makes checking parts quicker, easier, consistent and gives customers confidence we have the facilities to comprehensively measure complex parts.
